Preparing Digital Photos for Your Website

Choosing Your Photographs

One of the advantages of digital photography is that it’s cheap. The downside to this means that all too often we take many more photographs than we actually need.

So how do you choose the best images to use for your website? There are no strict rules which allow us to decide the artistic merit of a photograph, but there are a few basic pointers that need to be considered when selecting photographs for your website:

Choosing you photographs
  • Focus – Ensure the subject in the photograph is in-focus and sharp, not blurred, which can be caused by ‘camera-shake’.
  • Exposure – Do not choose photographs that are underexposed (too dark) or overexposed (too bright)
  • Contrast – Try to avoid high-contrast photographs where the shadow areas are very dark and the highlight areas are very bright. This can often happen when taking photographs in bright sunlight. Sometimes it is difficult to see detail in high-contrast photographs and the eye is drawn to the brighter areas.
  • Backgrounds – Avoid selecting photographs that have busy or conflicting backgrounds as this will distract from the main subject matter. Cropping can be used to remove unwanted parts of the background.

If you don’t have any of your own photographs for use on your website you could use royalty-free stock images. Many on-line image libraries exist that allow you to choose from hundreds of thousands of images and download them for a nominal fee per image. We recommend www.istockphoto.com, where typical website resolution images only cost about £1 each!

Select a suitable photograph on your computer that you wish to prepare for your website. On the Web Resizer website home page click the orange ‘Resize Photos Now’ button to start.

At the top of the next page in the area labelled ‘Upload an image to optimize’ click the browse button. In the 'choose file' window that opens browse to the directory that contains your photographs and select your chosen image, then click the 'Open' button. Then click the ‘upload image’ button on the 'Web Resizer' web page.

Your chosen image will then be displayed once uploaded. This may take a few seconds if it is a large image file.
